Bangladesh Foreign Minister called on the Bhutanese King

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni, MP called on the Bhutanese King today at Hotel Sonargaon. King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck arrived in Bangladesh today on five-day state visit.

Recalling the pivotal role of the His Majesty the Third King and people of Bhutan for their unstinted support during the war of liberation of Bangladesh, the Forerign Minister stated that the presence of the King during the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the Independence and National Day of Bangladesh is a fitting tribute and recognition of the contribution of Bhutan to the War of Liberation of Bangladesh.

His Majesty the King expressed his happiness at being able to visit Bangladesh particularly during such an auspicious occasion.

The issues related to bilateral cooperation in the sectors such as trade, connectivity, energy, education, climate change etc. came up for discussion during the call on. Referring to the visit of the Bangladesh Prime Minister to Thimphu in November 2009 and the return visit by the Prime Minister of Bhutan in January this year, Foreign Minister asserted that these visits have infused dynamism to the bilateral relations and raised the relationship to a higher trajectory.

Dipu Moni also recalled her visit to Thimphu in February and expressed her appreciation for the government of Bhutan and His Majesty the King for successfully steering the SAARC process during the chairmanship of Bhutan.

His Majesty the King appreciated the initiatives taken by the Prime Minister of Bangladesh to strengthen and widen the relations between Bangladesh and Bhutan which have brought substantial results. He also expressed his firm conviction that the present level of engagements between the two countries would bring benefits to the peoples of the two friendly countries.

Foreign Minister Dipu Moni received in audience by King of Bhutan

Thimphu, 09 Feb 2011

Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni, MP who is now in Thimphu to attend the Thirty Third Session of the SAARC Council of Minister had an audience with His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk, Fifth King of Bhutan today at 1100 hrs. Foreign Secretary Mr. Mohamed Mijarul Quayes and Mr. Imtiaz Ahmed, Ambassador of Bangladesh to Bhutan accompanied Foreign Minister during the audience.

Foreign Minister handed over a letter of invitation from the Hon'ble President of Bangladesh to His Majesty the King inviting him to visit Bangladesh as a guest during the 40th anniversary celebrations of Independence and National Day on 26 March 2011. His Majesty the King graciously accepted the invitation and said that he would be happy to visit Bangladesh on the occasion. In this context, His Majesty the King recalled that he had visited Bangladesh only once as a young boy and was keen to visit the country once again.

During the nearly hour long audience the Foreign Minister took the opportunity to recall the recently concluded successful visit to Bangladesh by the Prime Minister of Bhutan which had contributed to further cementing of the relations between Bangladesh and Bhutan. She referred to the multifaceted relations between Bangladesh and Bhutan based on similarity of views and shared vision for socio-economic upliftment of the peoples of the two countries.

Foreign Minister also briefed His Majesty the King on the outcome of the Council of Ministers and complimented Bhutan for not only successfully holding the 16th SAARC Summit last year but subsequently for following up on the various initiatives to carry the SAARC process forward. She recalled the contribution of His Majesty the King and his father the Fourth King in promoting and consolidating democracy in Bhutan and in this context noted with satisfaction that it was only appropriate that the idea of SAARC Charter for Democracy had been mooted during the Summit in Thimphu and adopted during the this meeting of the Council of Ministers.

His Majesty the King warmly thanked Foreign Minister for the sentiments expressed by her. He also shared his vision for the development of Bhutan and the strengthening of the democratic institutions in the country as well as grater cooperation among the south Asian nations. He mentioned that both he and his father the Fourth King were keen to promote the relations with Bangladesh and held Bangladesh in high regard. He also stated that he held Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in high esteem for her visionary leadership and personal qualities and contribution to promotion of cooperation among the countries in the region.

He also requested Foreign Mister to convey his warm regards to the Hon'ble President and Hon'ble Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
