Several Maoist rebels were shot dead in clashes with the security
forces in Baglung, Arghakhanchi and Gorkha districts.

Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) has launched security operations
in Syanja and Tanahun districts as well as in Gulmi and Pyuthan districts.

Landmines: The "Himsa Birodh Abhiyan", an civil rights group, asked
the Maoists to desist from placing landmines on roads and highways. A total
of 976 people have fallen victim of landmine explosions in Nepal in the
first six months of the year 2004.

Disappearances: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has said
they have received more than 1400 complaints regarding disappeared persons.

Truce decision: Leaders of major political parties have welcomed the
Maoists'decision to suspend their armed actions during the Dashain festival.

announcement to suspend all military action against Government forces during

Baglung:
Local Maoist militia have abducted for the second time more
than 50 activists of People's Front Nepal-PFN. Earlier this the PLA central
command said that abductions of PFN cadres are against the policy of the
Maoists' leadership.

Temporary ceasefire: The Government has announced that the security
forces would suspend their offensive operations from 18 to 27 October,
2004.

Temporary ceasefire: The UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan welcomes the
announcement by the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) to suspend military
action for a period of nine days coinciding with the Nepalese Dashain festivals
beginning on 20 October 2004 and the decision of His Majesty's Government
of Nepal not to initiate offensives against the insurgent forces. The Secretary-General
remains at the disposal of Nepal to assist in any manner that would lead
to the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Nepal. |

The Government would have no problems to remove the
terrorist tag as well as the red corner notice if the Maoists come to the
negotiation table, Nepal's Deputy PM said.

Myagdi: The reconstrution works of Government buildings started seven
month after the Maoist raid on Beni, the headquarters of Myagdi.

RNA: The commander-in-chief of the Royal Nepalese Army said that RNA
forces have sucessfully figthted against the Maoist rebels. The Army commander
has also expressed dissatisfaction over the Government's decision to stop

Joint security operation:
Nepal and Indian security officials have
started joint operation in the eastern Terai region to control any possible
movements of Maoists along the Indian-Nepali border. Indian police will
soon establish six more check posts along the border line of Siraha and
Sunsari districts.

Elections: A Minister of the Nepal Government of Nepal has said that
Government will declare election in Nepal after two months, whether or
not Maoists come to negotiation table.

National unity: King Gyanendra has said that peace-loving multiparty
democratic forces should unite for the nation's well-being and to
solve the problem facing the country. The King said also that acts of violence
must be brought to an end immediately and peace restored. |

Journalists:
Reporters Without Borders said that more journalists were
arrested in Nepal in 2003 than in any other country in the world.

Ceasefire: Maoists must assure that they will come to the negotiation
table for peace talks before the Government will announce a new unilateral
ceasefire, a minister said.

Talk appeal: PM Deuba has made a fresh appeal to Maoist rebels to join
peace talks. The election process would begin soon if the Maoists failed
to respond to the Government's proposal for talks.
