February102007»Arms monitoring:The Maoist rebels lockedup their arms under UN supervision in five out of seven camps, taking themanother step closer to joining the government.
Theregistration of Maoist guerrillas and their arms had been completed inSurkhet, Kailali, Chitwan, Nawalparasi and Rolpa districts. Only two cantonmentsin Sindhuli and Ilam districts are left.

»Communist rally:It's the first time CPN(M) chairman Prachanda has spoken publicly in Kathmandu. Prachanda warnedof a "massive conspiracy" threatening to disrupt plans for an electionin June. The rebel chief apologized for the mistakes of the past, includingexcessive violence and the targeting of unarmed civilians. He said hisparty would continue pushing for a federal republic. Prachanda also promisedthat a crackdown on corruption would be a top priority if the Maoists gainlegitimate political power.
