More cranes sighted in Chumey Valley |
|
A flock of black-necked cranes spotted in Gaytsa recently came as a relief to villagers who say that the bird has stopped coming in groups to the once rich habitat.
Villagers say that the birds, except for one or two has stopped coming to Gaytsa for more than two decades. "The last time I saw a group of black necked cranes in Gaytsa was a long time ago, about 20 years," said Chador, a health assistant who is also from Bumthang. The birds started coming back to Bumthang very recently and now the number is increasing every year, according to another villager from Chumey, Jamtsho. "I saw the first pair in Gaytsa last year," he said.

Although the forest division in Bumthang did not have records or the exact year of the bird's reappearance, officials said that number had been increasing gradually. The Bumthang district forest officer (DFO) Ratu, said eight birds in Choekhor gewog, three in Tang, and two around the Chamkhar town was spotted in January 2010. "But it is not known whether they are from the same group or not," he said. |

The Assistant forest officer (AFO) of Bumthang forest division in Chumey, Tenzin Chogyel, said that the number of the birds has increased this year in Chumey. "There were only two birds last year. Three more had joined them this year," he said. The birds starts arriving in Chumey in September and leave between February and March, according the AFO.
