Clean
water starts flowing at Pashupati temple area |

| After
a decade, clean water has started flowing along the Bagmati bank in the
Pashupati area.The chairman of Bagmati Area Sanitation Project (BASP) said
the construction of a 572-metre-tunnel has started and waste water from
Bouddha, Jorpati and Chabahil area now does not flow along the Bagmati
bank of the Pashupatinath area. The tunnel saves the temple premises of
Pashupatinath, the holiest Hindu shrine of the county, from being "contaminated"
with the Bagmati water that flows along the river. |

However,
the waste water joins the river again down stream. The Bagmati water has
been tremendously contaminated because of the waste water flowing down
from the surrounding villages. BASP was established to improve the environment
of Bagmati area right from Shivapuri Watershed area to Chobhar, in 1996.
The
project has been constructing a huge water treatment plant at the Guheshwowri
area that will treat the whole of waste water from the basin around the
Upper Bagmati or 537 hectares area in Pashupati, Gaurighat, Mitrapark,
Tusal, Chabahil, Bouddha, Jorpati and Gokarna. The plant refines
the water so that it becomes free of bigger objects and sends it to the
main chamber for 16 hours that will in turn give space to generate bacteria
to clean impure elements before sending the water to the tunnel. The sludges
separated from the last step will be dried and then turned into manure.
